A Charlie Brown Christmas

A Charlie Brown Christmas

50 years after it was created, the animated cartoon A Charlie Brown Christmas continues to be one of the most loved Christmas films.  In this film there are no elves, no reindeer, no Santa. It's just about us.

The Spirit of Christmas
Charles Schulz, the creator, wrote a short story about how a meaningful holiday such as Christmas has become so commercialized that it has lost any meaning.

The magic of Christmas now is the kind of magic we create when we pay attention to someone other than ourselves.
The film emphasizes the need for hope and love, reminding us that the Christmas season can bring anxiety and a feeling of being alone and unloved for many people.

"I know nobody likes me," sighs Charlie Brown in the animated special.  "Why do we have to have a holiday season to emphasize it?"

The Charlie Brown Christmas Tree
Charlie buys a sad little Christmas tree for the school play.  This tree represents all the world's underfed, unseen, unloved people.  However, it can still be rescued.

In fact, with a little love, care and attention, it can truly become something special and even magic.

Black Friday

  • Black Friday always occurs on the day after Thanksgiving. It is the last Friday of the month of November.
  • Black Friday is not a national holiday, although many employers give their workers this day off work in addition to Thanksgiving Thursday.
  • Black Friday is also known as ‘The Day After Thanksgiving’.
  • It’s believed that Black Friday originated in Philadelphia in the early 1960s.
  • The name supposedly originates from the moment in the year when retailers begin to turn a profit, and so go from their takings being in the ‘red’ to in the ‘black’.
  • Since about 2005, Black Friday has always been the busiest shopping day of the year.
  • In recent years, Black Friday has become less important as shops choose to offer discounts over the whole of November and December, and not just on Black Friday.
  • Many retailers open their stores from 4 or 5am to entice customers in to get the best deals. Some stores, including Target and Macy’s, open at midnight on Thanksgiving.
  • Some retailers even open on Thanksgiving Day itself. This day has become known as ‘Black Thursday’ or ‘Gray Thursday’ by some.

Right: the things that allow children to live to their fullest potential
Need: the things that are absolutely necessary for all children to have or be able to do to live a happy and healthy life
Want: the things that are nice to have but are not necessary for a full life
On 20 November 1959, the United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.[9] The United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child on 20 November 1989 and can be found on the Council of Europe website.[10]The UN General Assembly adopted the Convention and opened it for signature on 20 November 1989 (the 30th anniversary of its Declaration of the Rights of the Child).[6] It came into force on 2 September 1990, after it was ratified by the required number of nations. Cambridgeshire Time Credits - a volunteer's story

Volunteering means spending some of your free time helping others. You may volunteer to help other people, such as the families who lost their homes after a natural disaster. But you can also volunteer to protect animals, the environment, or any other cause that you care about.

Volunteering also lets you see your own life in new ways. Sometimes it's easy to worry about stuff like grades or get annoyed because you don't have the most expensive sneakers or the newest computer game. Volunteering lets you spend some time focusing on others for a while.

Ordinary and Extraordinary jobs

The Most Extraordinary Jobs

1. Pet Food Tester
Yes, it's a thing, and yes it's totally gross.
But as the owner of pet food company Huds and Toke, Mark Gooley, says, "If you wouldn't put it in your mouth, don't you dare expect your dog to eat it."
Mr Gooley eats dog food for a living. He eats everything from doggie treats and chewy bones to liver mixture.

2. Gumologist
A lot of hard work goes into creating the perfect piece of chewy.
Just ask Jesse Kiefer, who works as a Gumologist for Cadbury Schweppes.
Kiefer has to get the flavour just right, which isn't easy with some combos like strawberry and lime - which he says don't complement each other that well.

3. Waterslide Tester
Monday morning definitely seems a lot more enticing if you get to spend your working week slipping down water slides. Especially come summer.
And water slides are usually placed in massive theme parks. Imagine getting to spend your lunch break on a rollercoaster, and eating a hot dog for lunch.
Working holiday, am I right?
