Museums

Explain that real museums are doing exactly this—saving the 'shoes and phones' of the past so we don't forget who we were.

The 100-Year Exhibit

Goal: Teach the core purpose of museums (selection, preservation, and storytelling) through active creation.

The Scenario:

"Imagine it is the year 2125 (100 years from now). Earth has changed completely. You are the Chief Curators of the new Museum of 21st Century Life. You have found a time capsule from the year 2025."

The Challenge: Each team must curate a "Mini-Exhibit" consisting of 5 items that represent what life is like right now. They can choose objects from the classroom, their pockets, or draw/print pictures of items (e.g., a smartphone, a fidget toy, a face mask, a specific snack wrapper).

The Rules:

  1. Select: Pick 5 items.

  2. Label: Write a "Museum Plaque" for one of the items. Because the people in 2125 might not know what these things are, the description must sound "historical" and "scientific."

  3. Display: Arrange the items on a table like a museum display.

The Gallery Walk

Goal:  critical thinking.

  1. Tour: Teams walk around to view other groups' exhibits.

  2. Critique: Give each student sticky notes to leave "Visitor Comments" on the displays.

  3. Discussion:

    • "Why did you choose these items over others?"

    • "What would happen if we didn't save these things?"
